This is quite a well-written article by Johnson Grey, that I grabbed from an old but good BDSM FAQ that he authored through usenet in 1995. The article is basically about the subject, which is thoroughly explained, with a strong protest note. And yep, this is the author’s photo on the left.

Why is SM taboo?

…is SM criminal, unnatural, immoral, unethical, or unhealthy?

If what we’ve been saying in this FAQ is accurate, then why haven’t more people heard this? Why are the prevailing images of SM so negative?

There is no doubt that they _are_ negative. Not long ago I was informed that there are some members of the Winnipeg (Canada) police department who believe that soc.subculture.bondage-bdsm is “a textbook on how to torture women for sexual pleasure. It’s obscene.” Said police were considering how to deal with s.s.b-b on obscenity grounds. In England in 1991, a group of gay men who had gathered for an SM play party in which they were using whips for pleasure were arrested and charged with battery, EVEN THOUGH they had all agreed to be doing exactly what they were doing, and WANTED to be doing it. Consensual SM is illegal in England. How can this be?

The crucial distinction here is between consent and non-consent. The difference between whipping someone in a scene and assaulting them on the street is the difference between sex and rape. If everyone involved agrees to what is happening, it is not a crime. If they do not, then it is. This distinction is not in principle difficult to understand, and being involved in SM makes it very clear. SM practitioners are _more_ familiar with consent issues than most, and as such are _less_ likely to commit crimes of the sort that people confuse with SM. And NONE of the material in this FAQ advocates ANY kind of nonconsensual, criminal behavior.

Unfortunately, there are many who would be arbiters of what others may and may not legally consent to do. I believe that consenting adults should be free to do as they wish in the privacy of their homes. There are many who don’t believe this is acceptable. It serves them to confuse the issue by claiming “SM people are sadistic rapists” when in fact we are nothing of the sort. Criminalizing consensual sexual activities (sodomy, SM, even prostitution) is an old tradition, but in my view, an unjustifiable one.

The book Psychopathia Sexualis (1886) is the best-known work of the Austrian psychiatrist Krafft-Ebing. It is basically about sexual perversity: a series of case studies dealing with such topics as sadism, masochism (he came up with the terms, btw), homosexuality, etc. Despite the “scientificity” of the work, it was quite popular among lay readers. But of course, Psychopathia Sexualis is one of the most important works in history regarding human sexuality. Much has changed since… Views have changed significantly on the subject of perversity. Electricity, communication, cinema had their effect on us… But, the heart of mankind is still the same. So, enjoy reading!

…He felt an impulse to throw himself at her feet, kiss them, and follow her like a dog or slave. Her “majestic” feet clad in patent leather boots especially captivated him. He trembled with voluptuous excitement. During the night he could not find sleep for the thought of the woman haunted him. He imagined that he was kissing this woman’s feet. This fancy superinduced ejaculation…

…He reveled in the thought of the pretty foot of an imperious woman and associated this thought with the olfactory impression he would receive from its proximity. In erotic dreams he would follow such women. Rain would begin to fall and the woman raising her skirts would show her pretty foot, ankle and calf, encased in a silken stocking. As soon as he grasped and fondled the warm form, so soft and yet so firm, he would ejaculate. On rainy days he used to patrol the streets to see such scenes in reality. If he saw what he came for he would carry away the impression in his memory and it became the object of his nightly dreams and acts of psychical masturbation…
